The Northwestern Mutual Foundation has announced a $5 million donation to Children’s Wisconsin and the MACC Fund Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders.

The funding represents the company’s largest standalone donation connected to its national philanthropic cause of childhood cancer. The funding will span five years through 2025.

The entrance to the new addition at Children’s flagship hospital in Wauwatosa will feature the Northwestern Mutual Welcome and Information Center.

The funds will go to launching both an in-hospital navigator and psycho-social programs to help guide patients and their families through diagnosis, treatment and recovery, Children’s and Northwestern Mutual said. The psycho-social team consists of psychologists, social workers, child life, recreational therapists and others.

The donation also will help expand existing programs and services including the Northwestern Mutual Day Hospital for Childhood Cancer. The facility provides outpatient care for children with cancer and blood disorders.

The funding further will support patient care and a community navigator for families impacted by sickle cell disease.

Children’s runs the largest pediatric cancer center in Wisconsin. The Northwestern Mutual Foundation started its donations to the hospital in 1978.

Since 2012, Northwestern Mutual’s Childhood Cancer Program has contributed more than $35 million to support advancing childhood cancer research nationwide.
